      The collection of Theodore Champion, Paris
- An admirable collection of uncanceled European stamps was shown by M.Champion, Paris. First off all it's a complete collection of French stamps from 1849 until 1900.
      From the first series, called Ceres it was displayed lo cts., yellowish-bister 4 stamps and a row of 3 stamps with a tete-beche in the middle and a pair "reimpression" colored in brownish-bister. The rare stamp of 15 cts., 2 pieces green, 1 in dark green and a pair "reimpression" light green. 20 cts., black, 2 unique pairs on white, yellowish and brownish paper, a pair "tete-beche", 2 blocks of 9 stamps on yellowish and brownish paper, each block having a "tete-beche' middle stamp. A pair "reimpression" on brownish paper, 25 cts., blue, unique items, in nuances, one block of four, dark blue, one stamp on brownish paper, a pair "tete-beche" and one ultramarine pair "reimprerssion". 40 cts., orange, 5 unique items, one pair having the figure 4 retouched.
      The stamp 1 frs., bright red and faint red, unique items; rows of three stamps, left upper corner of the sheet, "vervelle" colored. Row of three canceled stamps having the middle stamp reversed, unique item, then unique items, one pair and one block of four with the margin of the sheet, dark red and a row of 5 stamps having the middle stamp reversed, all on brownish paper and one pair "reimpression", lighter red.
       The stamp of 20 cts., blue, never circulated was represented by three unique pieces, 2 blocks of 9 stamps having a "tete-beche" stamp and a stamp of 20 cts., blue, with red surcharge 25 cts.
      One decree printed in 1849, dated 1849, December 1st, and sent to postal offices explaining to the postal officers the two nuances, light and dark, of the stamp of 1 fs having 4 half stamps of this stamp, in different nuances stuck to it.
      The issue of 1852, Napoleon, very beautiful represented by unused genuine items and reprints items; 10 cts., yellow-bister, 2 unique items and a pair of "reimpression", 25 cts., blue, three nuances and a pair "reimpression".
      The issue of 1853\ 60. All the pieces being the most beautiful ones, among them 5 cts., green, 4 unique items and 3 pairs 2o cts., light to dark blue pairs in nuances, one pair from the left upper corner of the sheet. Pairs on pink and greenish paper; one pair "tete-beche", essay. One row of 4 stamps having the margin of the sheet, lower left corner bearing the notice in ink: "Trouve dans un livre" (Found in a book). Finally a big block of 18 stamps from the margin of the sheet having a reversed stamp at the middle.
      25 cts., blue, one stamp, two pairs and one pair "reimpression", 40 cts., unique items pairs from the sheet corners, one pair on brownish paper, 80 cts., carmine, two vertical pairs, one pair "tete-beche". 1 frs., carmine, unique items, pairs and block of 6 stamps from the lower left corner of the sheet, having a reversed stamp, unique item. Finally a block of four, dark-carmine stamps with a stamp "tete-beche".
      The issue of 1862, Napoleon, perforated stamps, all the values in nuances, with a block of 6 stamps from the right margin of the sheet, having a reversed stamp, and also one block of four stamps of 80 cts, carmine, from the lower left corner, having reversed the stamp from the corner.
      The issue of 1863\ 71, Napoleon with the crown of laurel, all the values in nuances; the stamp of 4 cts., gray, displayed in a big block of 24 stamps from the right margin of the sheet, having a reversed stamp; also a block of six light yellowish-gray stamps also having a reversed stamp. One stamp of 20 cts., blue, with the mention: horn at the nose, meaning an white line coming from the nose. A stamp of 10 cts., light blue with surcharge, 10 in dark blue. The stamp of 5 frs., 3 pieces and 2 pairs from the margin and the corner of the sheet.
      The issue of 1870\71 Paris Printing House The stamps "Ceres" 10 cts., yellowish-bister, one block of 9 stamp with the middle stamp reversed. The stamp of 20 cts., in nuances, from light blue to dark blue. Idem 2 blocks of 9 stamps, light and dark blue, each block having the middle stamp reversed. The stamp of 40 cts., was exhibited with a block of four, the lower row having the figure 4 retouched.
      1870, Bordeaux issue. A splendid collection of these interesting stamps in unused units, pairs and blocks in the best possible condition was displayed as follows: 1 ct., olive in pairs row of 3 pieces and 3 blocks of four, 2 cts., units in many nuances, units and pairs 4 cts., gray idem three pairs and two blocks of four also 5 cts., green and lo cts., yellowish-bister 20 cts, two issues, light blue to dark blue, including the block of four, then one pair and one block of six ultramarine stamps, the block being unique item; also from the third issue of these ultramarine stamps were displayed pairs and a row of three stamps. The very interesting stamp of 40 cts., yellowish-orange to reddish-orange, 6 stamps; 2 reddish-brown and "cinabre"; 4 purple-red stamps with a block of four, 30 cts., sepia bister, 3 stamps and two pairs and 80 cts., dark-carmine, represented by 8 stamps, nuances and two pairs.
      The issue of 1871\75 , "CERES", perforated, thick figures, was well represented by units and also tete-beche pairs of each value, so that 10, 15 and 25 cts.
It was displayed, from the issue of 1876-77 those 2 rarities, 1 ct., black on dark-blue paper and the stamp planned but not issued of 20 cts. blue; finally the first issue "Pay Tax".
      Naples (Sicily). A splendid collection of unused stamps with 3 stamps ½ blue Tornesa (coat of arms) and 3 stamps White Cross of Savoya.
      Sicily, also very nice collection following the nuances and prints. To note the row of 5 stamps 10 grana, dark blue.
      Pope's State, complete, with a vertical pair half Baj, canceled, reversed.
      Sardinia, complete, the very beautiful issue of 1853 with 3 stamps and 3 pairs of corners from unused sheets; to note a letter of the issue of 1855, bearing a stamp of 10 cts., sepia and 40 c., first stamp with the reversed King' s effigy.
      Toscana, splendid, uncanceled, from the issue of 1851-1857 18 stamps 1 Ouattrino to 60 Crazie; also the issue of 1860, complete, including the extremely rare stamp of 3 Lira, dark yellow. Among the newspapers stamps an unused reversed pair could be seen.
      Parma, completely unused; from the first series of 1854 it was displayed a letter bearing a pair of 15-51 centes, reversed. The issue of 1859 was represented by 18 unused stamps up to 80 c., and also varieties e.g.; 0 (zero) wide, reversed figure, broken E and A.
      Modena, as complete as can be and beautifully collected with all the varieties and errors ,in units and many pairs. From the issue of 1852 a letter bearing a stamp of 25 cent and one bearing a stamp of 15 cent (errors). The stamp of 40 cent, represented by 6 errors. From the issue of 1859 we note 5 stamps with the error CENT instead of CENT, and also stamps for journals, 3 stamps of 9 cents and 2 stamps of 10 cent., one of them with the error CENT1, the figure 1 instead of T.
      Spain. A splendid complete collection of unused stamps on 11 album sheets. The issue of 1850 is complete. The issue of 1851 with "Dos Reales", unused, and a canceled pair. From the issue of 1852 we note a row of 3 stamps, 2 Reales canceled. The issue of 1853, with 6 cent, on azure paper, uncanceled Both stamps from Madrid. The issue of 1854 is brilliant due to the stamp of 2 Reales on azure paper, unused and to the block of four uncanceled stamps. All the values are on azure paper. The issue of 1855 with the error 2 Reales greenish-blue, canceled. All the following issues are unused and in perfect condition. The issue of 1865 has the error 12 c., blue-pink, with the reversed Queen's effigy, unperforated and perforated, both being used stamps. Stamps for newspapers from 1868\69 5 mil., pair tete-beche, 10 mil., block of four with a reverse stamp. The issue of 1867 is brilliant due to the stamp of 25 M., d.E. with the reversed Queen's effigy and surcharged; "Habilitado por la Nacion". A beautiful collection of 29 uncanceled stamps with surcharge; "Habilitado por la Nacion". Also 7 stamps with surcharge HPN.
      Portugal. All the issues from 1853 to 1879 in very beautiful uncanceled items. The issue of 1866 also in pairs.
      Luxembourg. The issues of 1852-1880, uncanceled and in perfect condition. 4 pairs of 25 and 40 c.,of 1859; the issue of 1865\71, 1\2 cent, unused, 4 and 10 cent., unperforated ; error 1 Prac instead of 1 Franc. All the stamps are with official surcharge from 1875-1881.
      Belgium. The issue of 1849-1869 and of 1878 in splendid unused items.
      Austria. 1850. The series of the stamps of 1 to 9 kr., on thin and thick paper. 3 kr., red on laid paper, unused. The error 1867 3 kr., red instead of green, canceled, a rarity of great value. The renowned newspapers stamps "Mercur" from 1850\56, blue-yellow, pale-pink together with the famous uncanceled, red "Mercur", the yellow canceled stamps on thin and thick paper. One blue "Mercur" on laid paper.
      Lombardia-Venice. The issue of 1850 on thin and thick laid paper, values of 15, 20 and 45 centes, unused. Then the issues until 1864. Stamps for newspapers 4 kr., red, canceled, and 1 kr., 2 kr. and 4 kr. red.
      Russia. Very beautiful unused items with many varieties. The first stamp of 1857, one piece and an unused pair and a pair of letters. The issue of 1868 on horizontally laid paper; the stamp of 10 kop. canceled, with the reversed coat of arms from the middle. The stamp of 3 kop., with background of 5 kop., and then the same issue on horizontally and vertically laid paper. The canceled stamp XX KOP., blue-orange, having the middle coat of arms reversed. The unused issue of 1883 with the stamp of 14 kop., the middle coat of arms reversed, canceled.
       The rare stamps of the issue of 1883; 3½ and 7 Roubles, with and without lightning. The stamp of 14 kop. with the reversed middle coat of arms, also the values of 15 and 25 kop., with the reversed coat, all canceled. It was also displayed bigger values with the reversed middle coat of arms.
      Finland. Very beautifully collected having uncanceled perfect items. The issue of 1856 5 kop., reversed pair, 10 kop block of four, tete-beche. The issues of 1860, 1866 and 1870 have very beautiful pieces with perforations, pairs and blocks of four of 5, 8 and 10 Pen; one pair tete-beche 5-10 Pen., violet, canceled. The issue of 1884; unused and blocks of four of 5 Pen. green and 20 Pen., orange, with a stamp tete-beche. All kinds of perforation until 1891. Big values of Roubles from 1891 with the error Rub. 3.50, black and yellow.
      Switzerland. Cantonment stamps. Double Geneva, canceled and uncanceled pair. Two letters with horizon and vertical pairs. The stamp from 1845-48 "Poste de Geneve", 3 stamps. So called stamp Neuchatel 1849\50 of 4 and 5 cts., uncanceled, idem 3 stamps of 5 cts., on letters. A cover with the embossed stamp "Poste de Geneve". Two stamps cut from the envelopes and used for franking a letter. A letter bearing one stamp from 1849 and one of the issue of 1851.
       The pigeon of Basel. A splendid pair from the upper corner of the sheet and unique item. A pair "reimpression". So called stamp "Winterhur", one stamp and one pair.
      Federal post 1850. 2½ R. One row of 3 stamps. The same with bordered cross. 2 stamps and one pair, unused. The beautiful pieces of the stamps "Rayon" I and II from 1850, of 5 and 10 R., Rayon III, 15 Rappen, red. The issues of 1854\62, unperforated, with silk thread and also the values of 2,5 10 and 40 R. with green silk thread, unused. The issue of 1862, perforated. The values of 5, 10 and 25 R. with double pressed and reversed figures. The value of 5 R, uncanceled and canceled, the other two values, canceled. A letter with 3 stamps of 5 Rappen, 2 with errors, printed in blue, the third one normally printed, in bister, unique item.
      England, uncanceled, splendid.1840, 1 Pence, black, single and pairs. A row of 5 canceled stamps of 2 Pence. The stamp of 1 Penny on azure paper. Big values in Shillings, single and pairs. All the issues from 1854 until 1869 are in very beautiful unused pieces. The issue of 1867\82 5 Sh. to 5 L. the last ones on white and azure paper; all the issues of 1870 until 1884, with the values until 10 Shillings. The issue of 1884, two copies of the stamps of 1 L., different watermarks.
      The issue of 1887- 1900 to L., uncanceled, two copies of the first English stamp having in the upper corners the letters V and R, one Penny black. A splendid collection of surcharged stamps; 1 R OFFICIAL up to 1 L, bister and 1 L, green; Govt Parcels, Army Official, O. W. Official, Board of Education, Admiralty Official. Finally a beautiful collection of telegraphic stamps up to 5 L. from the 1870-81 years. Military telegraphs stamps and Army telegraphs stamps, with surcharge, in Piastri, all unused.
      The old stamps collection from Moldavia, United Principalities and Romania of Mr. Baron of Vilzleben,       Bucharest:
- Moldavia, first issue of 1858, November, 1-st.
- A sheet of stamps "Porto Gazetei", "Bull Head" 5 PAR. black on white paper, with broken lower frame.
- A sheet of "Bull Head" 40 PAR. blue on white paper.
- A sheet of "Bull Head" 40 PAR greenish-blue on white paper.
- One pair, one block of four and one block of six "Bull Heads" stamps, 80 PAR, red on white paper, the stamps being tete-beche.
- One letter with a "Bull Head" stamp, 27 PAR black on pale-pink paper, 1-st issue from Moldavia of 1858, July, 15.
- One letter with a "Bull Head" stamp, 54 PAR blue on greenish paper, of the same issue.
- One letter with "Bull Head" stamp, 108 PAR, blue on pale-pink paper.
- One band for forms, addressed, but probably not sent, with 5 PAR. "Porto Gazetei" of 1858, without broken lower line, and uncanceled
- Two letters having each of them a band of four stamps of 40 PAR, blue; idem two letters having each of them a band of 80 PAR red.
- One revue of 1858 stamped with a pair of "Porto Gazetei" 5 PAR, black on azure paper.
- United Romanian Principalities issue of 1932, August, 1-st.
- One sheet of stamps 3 PAR, yellow.
- One sheet of stamps 6 PAR, red.
- One sheet of stamps 30 PAR, blue, laid paper; all these three sheets are canceled by hand.
- One sheet of 30 PAR, typographic copy, on azure paper.
- One letter with 5 and an another with 6 stamps of 3 PAR.
- One letter stamped with a block of 5 stamps of 6 PAR, red on laid paper, unique item.
- The stamps with the effigy of the Ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza, issue of 1865, January, 1-st.
- One block of 35 stamps of 2 PAR, orange, an another block of 60 stamps of 2 PAR, orange, normal paper, representing the upper part of the sheet.
      From the stamps of 5 PAR it were displayed blocks of four on normal and laid paper and a big block of 24 stamps made from a corner of the sheet.
- A rich selection of Cuza stamps of 2 and 5 PAR was very much admired by the experts. It were displayed: two newspapers entitled "Mos Ion", from 1865, January, stamped, one of them, with a yellow stamp and the other with an orange stamp Cuza, 2 PAR, other two forms stamped, each of them, with a stamp of 2 PAR., 4 letters with 4 stamps of 5 PAR, each, one letter with 4 stamps, one letter Loco Giurgiu, to the Mayor of Vlasca district, stamped on averse with a stamp of 5 PAR, on reverse with the stamp of 20 PAR for the recommended tax.
- The stamps with the effigy of the Ruler Carol I - issue 1866, August, 1-st. 2 PAR, yellow, blocks of 18 pieces on thick paper, one block of 14 stamps of the right upper corner with empty space. Also big blocks of 5 PAR, black on blue paper from the right upper corner and from the lower corner of the sheet.
- The stamp of 20 PAR, black on thick paper, pink, very rare, uncanceled, was represented by big blocks, corners of the sheets with empty space, or with points in Greek next to the band.
- The issue of 1868 with the new national currency BANI, known under the name "Carol with whiskers" was well represented by many and various unused blocks.
- Stamps of 2 BANI, orange, blocks from the lower corner of the sheet, with empty spaces, having up to 16 stamps and also blocks of the upper corner of the sheet.
- Stamps of 3 BANI, violet, among them a block from the lower left corner, having 16 stamps.
- Stamps of 4 BANI, in big blocks, e.g. 23 stamps from the lower right corner. Idem, from the left corner, one block of 21 stamps and one block of 16 stamps on brownish paper.
- The stamp of 18 BANI, red, was represented also by a beautiful block of 4 uncanceled stamps.
      The new issue of 1869, April, 1-st, was remarkable due to the richness of the displayed pieces. I note 5 blocks of 4 stamps, 10 BANI, blue, different nuances, on yellow paper included, 15 BANI, red, blocks from corners of the sheet and a beautiful block of 12 stamps from the edge of the sheet. The stamp of 25 BANI, orange and blue was represented by 3 blocks of 6 stamps and 2 big blocks one having 15 stamps and the other 20; finally the stamp of 50 BANI blue and red "Carol with whiskers" was brilliant in one block of 3 stamps with empty space, in one block of 4, one of 6 and a big block of 15 stamps from the left edge of the sheet.
      The issue of the 1871, known and appreciated under the name of "Carol with beard" was detailed collected as the previous stamps. The stamp of 5 BANI, red, was represented by blocks of 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9 stamps, most of all being corners of the sheet and a part of the sheet containing 35 stamps. The stamp of 10 BANI, yellow, blocks of 3, 8 and 10 stamps and one block of four on laid paper.
      The stamp of 10 BANI, blue, was admired in one block of 4 and one block of 6 stamps. 15 BANI, red, block of four and 25 BANI, bister, with blocks of 4 and 6 stamps.
      The issue of 1872, August, known under the name defective printings, was well represented by 2 blocks of 4 stamps of 10 BANI, greenish-blue; the second issue ultramarine, was very well collected; it could be seen a block of 6 stamps of 10 BANI, on yellow paper, a block of four on laid paper, a block of three with an empty space and a big block of 20 stamps from the right upper corner.
      The renown stamp of 50 BANI, blue-red, was displayed in 2 blocks of four.
      The stamps "Carol with beard" perforated were well represented by blocks of four and six stamps, red, one big block of 23 stamps of 10 BANI, blue and 4 blocks of four stamps of 25 BANI bister.
      The classic period of the Romanian stamps was brilliantly represented.
      The second epoch beginning with the stamps printed in Paris in 1872 was also beautifully displayed.
      Paris issue, 1½ BANI up to 50 BANI, completely in unused blocks of four; also Bucharest printings well represented. The issue of 1885 with 5 BANI, green, on white paper in different blocks of four.
      From the collection of essays and proofs of the Romanian stamps were displayed; 4 white sheets having two black prints of the first Moldavian stamps of 27, 54, 81 and 108 PAR, issued on 1891 on the occasion of the discovery of the original stamps.
      Proofs of Paris issue, big drawing in black China ink on white cardboard, which served as originals for the stamps of 1885 issue.
